1993’s Tombstone is a very good movie for beginning screenwriters to watch. The script has a very well-defined story-structure. It’s a prototypical ‘Hollywood movie’. It’s exactly what Hollywood wants.

Of course, I probably shouldn’t say that, as right now Hollywood really does not want westerns. And, they haven’t wanted westerns since the early 1940’s (with, of course, a little respite in the early 90’s thanks to Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven and, of course, Tombstone).

Analyzing the Story-Structures of Famous Screenplays: Tombstone

Based on a true story, Wyatt Earp and his brothers move to Tombstone Arizona at the end of the ‘wild west’ era of American history. The famous former law-men take on the local criminal gang (‘the Cowboys’ and their fierce leader Curly Bill) in order to protect the town and clean it up once and for all.

Along for the ride is notorious gambler and sharp-shooter, Doc Holliday.
